The piece features a recessed basin intended for washing calligraphy brushes, though it may also serve as a miniature incense burner or ashtray. Rendered with elegant curves, stylized limbs, and expressive antlers, the object displays design elements reminiscent of archaic Chinese bronze motifs, frequently adopted in Japanese scholar’s desk objects. The bronze has developed a warm brown patina with natural variations and surface wear consistent with age and use. The underside shows oxidation typical of mid-20th-century Japanese bronze casting.
