This is a large arrow holder from the Edo period, approximately 200 to 250 years ago. The ink holder at the tip is round. Ancient figures and horses are carved on both sides. A frog is carved on the top lid. The handle is also decorated with a dragon and a bowstring. As it is an old item, it shows some signs of use, but is in relatively good condition. A brush can be inserted by opening the top lid, but no brush is included. I have seen many arrow holders in my time, but this one is a relatively large and luxurious type. I believe it is an extremely rare arrow holder. A yatate is a portable writing tool that holds a brush and an ink bottle, and was used from the Edo period to the Taisho period.
