Replica of Byzantine Silver Ring – Sacred Figure Engraving (Archangel / Christ) – ca. 9th–11th Century
Bezel size: 19 × 12 mm
Inner diameter: 22 mm
Material: Solid silver
Condition: Good, with original patina
Description
A rare Byzantine silver ring featuring an oval bezel engraved with a sacred standing figure shown frontally, with a halo and lateral elements that resemble stylized wings. The figure holds a long staff or labarum, a typical attribute of divine authority in Byzantine iconography.
The depiction is consistent with representations of Byzantine Archangels (Michael or Gabriel), celebrated as powerful protectors in the Eastern Christian tradition. An alternative interpretation is an early medieval representation of Christ in angelic form, although the stylistic and symbolic features align more closely with an archangel.
The linear drapery and the geometric incision style are characteristic of Middle Byzantine craftsmanship.

Rings of this type served both devotional and apotropaic functions. They were worn as talismans granting divine protection and were sometimes used as personal seals. Angelic figures were especially popular for their protective symbolism, making such rings highly valued objects throughout the Byzantine world.
