Beskrivelse fra sælger
Double Capital; 12th-13th Century AD
Marble
Dimensions: 34 x 44 x 40 cm
Condition: Excellent, minimal material loss consistent with the period for this type of piece.
Provenance: French auction house, 2023
Double marble capital, belonging to the Romanesque period and dating from the 12th-13th centuries AD. Its form reveals a structural and decorative solution characteristic of monastic and ecclesiastical architecture of this period, in which solidity and formal sobriety are combined with an incipient search for plastic rhythm.
The capital has a double composition, formed by two attached shafts that share a common impost. The schematic volutes that decorate the corners are a clear inheritance from the classical Ionic order, reinterpreted with the austerity typical of the Romanesque style. The carving is robust and somewhat rough, suggesting an architectural rather than ornamental function, probably as a support for an arch in a cloister or gallery. The material provides a polished and resistant texture, although visible erosion denotes its age and exposure to the elements.
This type of double capital is common in transitional Romanesque architecture, especially in regions such as central Italy, southern France, and the Iberian Peninsula, where similar examples are preserved. Among them are the capitals of the cloister of Santo Domingo de Silos (Burgos) and those of the Monastery of San Juan de Duero (Soria).
Notes: The piece includes a Spanish Export License (Passport for the European Union). At the time of sale, it will be requested in the buyer's name; the process takes one to two weeks. - If the piece is destined for a location outside the European Union, a replacement export permit will be requested. This procedure involves a fee that the buyer must pay during the application process. This process may take 2 to 4 weeks. SHIPPED INSURED
