ΩΡΟΑΠΟΛΛΩΝΟΣ ΝΕΙΛΩΟΥ ΙΕΡΟΓΛΥΦΙΚΑ ΕΚΛΕΚΤΑ. Hori Apollinis Selecta Hieroglyphica. – Horapollo
Roma [Rome]: Apud Carolum Vulliettum, 1606. 272 pages. 10.5cm x 6.5cm. Hardcover with newer calf leather binding, gilt framed and decorated boards, gilt decorated and lettered spine, and blue endpapers. Later Roman edition of “Hori Apollinis Selecta Hieroglyphica” an emblem book that attempts to explain the "hidden" meanings of Egyptian hieroglyphs. Illustrated with an engraved title vignette and 172 in-text woodcuts throughout. The text is in Greek and Latin.
Rubbing, bumping, and wear to the boards and spine. The bottom of the spine is fraying a bit, and the front hinge is cracked at the bottom. Sticker of a defunct library on the bottom of the spine. Defunct library stamp and pencil markings on the recto of the front free endpaper. Pen markings and defunct library stamp on the recto of the first front flyleaf, and pen markings on the recto of the second front flyleaf. Defunct library stamp and pencil markings on the title page. The title vignette and many of the woodcuts are coloured-in by what seems to be a non-expert. There is also offsetting of the colours on many pages. Pages 3-6 have some restauration of the paper in the margins. There is a tear in the content in page 53/54. Page 63/64 has some restauration at the edges that does affect the content somewhat. Page 65/66 has a hole in the bottom of the page that does affect the content. See photos for all damages. Other than mentioned, the text is clear, the illustrations are a bit obscured by the colouring, and the binding is solid. Overall, a copy in fair condition.
