This Japanese tea bowl (chawan) is a hand-thrown stoneware piece, fired at high temperature and finished with a richly textured, natural ash-like glaze. The surface shows layered earthy tones ranging from deep brown to olive and grey, with subtle kiln marks and flowing glaze variations that reflect traditional Japanese firing aesthetics.
The form is well-balanced and tactile, with a slightly flared rim and a gently rounded body. Inside the bowl, the spiral marks left by the potter’s wheel remain visible beneath the glaze, adding to the sense of movement and handcraft. The foot is neatly trimmed, showing natural clay exposure and firing traces consistent with traditional studio pottery.
The bowl comes with its original wooden storage box (tomobako). While the box shows age-related wear, it complements the piece and suggests it was preserved and appreciated within a tea context.
This chawan is suitable both as a functional tea bowl and as a collectible example of Japanese ceramic tradition, valued for its wabi-sabi character, kiln effects, and honest craftsmanship.
Condition:
Good vintage condition. Minor surface irregularities and firing marks are inherent to the piece and part of its aesthetic. No visible cracks or repairs.
Approximate dimensions:
Diameter: approx. 9.5–10 cm
Height: approx. 6.5–7 cm
A strong example of rustic Japanese tea ceramics, appealing to collectors of chawan, tea ceremony objects, and traditional Japanese pottery.
