Item Description
This lot consists of two Japanese creative kokeshi dolls by different Prime Minister’s Award–winning artists, presented together as a refined pair. Both works are handcrafted from turned wood and finished with hand-painted floral designs, each reflecting the distinct aesthetic of its creator.
The smaller kokeshi was created by Kunio Miyagawa (Gunma Prefecture). It features an elegant composition of red and white plum blossoms, painted in a restrained yet expressive manner. The gentle facial expression, subtle use of color, and well-balanced proportions evoke a sense of purity and calm. The artist’s seal is present on the base. The title of this work can be translated as “Pure Innocence.”
The larger kokeshi was created by Muhitsu Miyajima (Yamagata Prefecture). It is decorated with flowing white cherry blossoms painted simply yet rhythmically across the elongated body. The tall, slender form enhances the vertical movement of the floral motif, giving the piece a serene and graceful presence. The base bears the artist’s seal. The title of this work can be translated as “Heart of Flowers.”
Both dolls show minor surface wear, small marks, and natural aging consistent with handmade wooden works, but there are no cracks or structural damages. Overall, they are well preserved and display beautifully.
