The print depicts an oiran(Courtesan), a high-ranking courtesan of the Yoshiwara pleasure district in Edo (present-day Tokyo), walking in an oiran dōchū procession accompanied by her kamuro (young attendants). This ceremonial procession symbolized the oiran’s elevated status, beauty, and refinement, and was one of the most iconic scenes of Edo-period urban culture. According to the Tokyo Metro Library Ukiyo-e Database (https://ukiyo-e.org/image/mak/14406-4), this work dates to 1867, the final years of the Edo period. You can observe pigment seepage to the reverse side of the paper, a characteristic feature of traditional woodblock printing on Japanese washi paper.
