This is an original Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print by Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900), one of the most celebrated ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo to Meiji period.
The print depicts an oiran(Courtesan), a high-ranking courtesan of the Yoshiwara pleasure district in Edo (present-day Tokyo), walking in an oiran dōchū procession accompanied by her kamuro (young attendants). This ceremonial procession symbolized the oiran’s elevated status, beauty, and refinement, and was one of the most iconic scenes of Edo-period urban culture.
According to the Tokyo Metro Library Ukiyo-e Database
(https://ukiyo-e.org/image/mak/14406-4), this work dates to 1867, the final years of the Edo period.
You can observe pigment seepage to the reverse side of the paper, a characteristic feature of traditional woodblock printing on Japanese washi paper.
The print will be shipped framed.
【About the Artist – Toyohara Kunichika】
https://www.viewingjapaneseprints.net/texts/ukiyoe/kunichika_toyohara.html
Toyohara Kunichika was especially renowned for his kabuki actor portraits (yakusha-e) and bijin-ga (images of beautiful women). Born in Edo (modern Tokyo), he studied under Utagawa Kunisada and gained widespread acclaim from the late Edo through the Meiji period.
Kunichika’s works are distinguished by vivid colors, dynamic compositions, and expressive figures, reflecting both the traditions of Edo culture and the dramatic social changes of early modern Japan. This print is an excellent example of his mature style and refined woodblock printing techniques, making it highly appealing to collectors of Japanese art and ukiyo-e.
【About Oiran Dōchū
Oiran dōchū refers to the ceremonial public procession of an oiran within the pleasure quarters of Edo-period Japan. It was a highly stylized and symbolic event that showcased the oiran’s rank, elegance, and cultural sophistication, and remains one of the most visually striking traditions associated with Japanese pleasure quarter culture.
