Japanese Kohiki Nanten Motif Tea Bowl with Original Wooden Box This piece is a Japanese tea bowl made of earthenware, finished with a white kohiki slip glaze and decorated with hand-painted red and green enamel depicting a nanten (nandina) motif. It has a warm and rustic appearance, embodying the aesthetic of wabi-sabi that is highly valued in traditional Japanese tea ceremony utensils. The soft white kohiki surface shows natural crackle patterns developed over time, creating a deep and expressive aged character. The red leaf motifs (resembling nanten or maple leaves) and green dot accents are entirely hand-painted, resulting in a restrained yet visually striking decoration. The bowl is intentionally not perfectly symmetrical and features a slightly irregular form. This asymmetry is considered an integral part of the deliberate wabi-sabi expression, enhancing both its visual appeal and usability. Such avoidance of strict symmetry is a characteristic that is highly appreciated in Japanese tea ceramics. In addition to the overall style and decoration, the character “犬” (inu) can be observed on the foot rim. Based on this mark and the stylistic features, this piece is considered to have a high possibility of being Inuyama ware. Furthermore, the painting style and composition evoke the aesthetic associated with the work of the Edo-period potter Ogata Kenzan, and share characteristics commonly seen in so-called Kenzan-style Inuyama ceramics. The foot is left unglazed, showing natural kiln marks typical of traditional Japanese ceramic production. The bowl is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako) with ink inscription, indicating that it has been carefully preserved. This piece is suitable not only for collectors of Japanese tea ceremony utensils, but also as a decorative object that brings a refined sense of Japanese aesthetics into interior spaces. ⸻ Details • Origin: Japan • Material: Earthenware • Technique: Kohiki slip glaze, overglaze enamel painting • Style: Wabi-sabi, Kenzan-style • Kiln / Tradition: Possible Inuyama ware • Period: 20th century (estimated) Condition: • Age-related crackle, stains, and signs of use are present • Slight irregularities in shape are intentional and part of the artistic style • No visible cracks or restorations • The wooden box shows wear consistent with age Size (approx.) • Diameter: 17.5 cm • Height: 9 cm
