Σωμά ιση’οδανσού - Ξύλο, Μέταλλο, σίδηρος, ξύλο Keyaki (zelkova), ξύλο Hinoki (κυπαρίσσι) - Ιαπωνία - Meiji period (1868-1912)
A rare and very large Soma wooden ishô’dansu 衣装箪笥 (cabinet of drawers) in two sections. Fully restored, cleaned, and waxed.
The drawer faces are crafted from precious keyaki 欅 (Zelkova – Japanese “oak”), while the exterior is made from Hinoki (Japanese cypress). The entire piece is finished in a shunkei-style reddish-brown lacquer, allowing the natural wood grain to remain visible.
The upper section contains two spacious full-width drawers. The lower section holds two drawers of varying size and a hinged door opening to two further small drawers. The drawers are fitted with iron warabite-shaped bail handles, incised with a foliage motif. They flank large circular iron lock plates decorated with a chiselled and hammered design of a diamond flower framed by scrolling foliage and finished with a copper rim.
These cabinets originate from the Soma region, a coastal area of Fukushima Prefecture.
