Fujita Fumio(藤田不美夫) Woodblock Print "Forest on the Shore"[岸辺の林] (1982 / Edition 88/200)
Japanese woodblock artist Fujita Fumio's favorite subject is the primal landscape that lies deep within—the presence of forests dominated by tranquility and purity.
This work, "Forest on the Shore," is No. 88 of a limited run of 200 produced in 1982. Its theme is the "birch forest," Fujita's specialty. Against a tranquil lakeside backdrop, slender white trunks stretch vertically, their fresh leaves shining in the light.
Birch trees are a symbol of northern Japan. Fujita captures their "white skin," "faint patterns," and "vertical rhythm" in a variety of woodblock prints. The birch trunks in this work resemble musical instruments standing on the earth, playing the sound of the wind.
The horizon of the lake's surface overlaps in the background, and the tranquil contrast between vertical and horizontal creates an overwhelming sense of tranquility.
The title "Forest by the Shore" symbolizes the boundary where human habitation and the natural world intersect. The birch trees standing at that boundary are quiet, like "witnesses watching over the passage of time," unfazed as they embrace the seasons.
The presence of the lake in the background of the canvas awakens the viewer's five senses: the coolness of the water, the summer morning light, and the chirping of the birds.
The birch's vertical lines complement modern, Nordic-inspired spaces well, making this piece a tranquil piece of art that can be displayed anywhere, whether in a living room, study, or bedroom.
