The box is decorated with an opulent Gold Makie (gold lacquer) phoenix motif (鳳凰図) symbolizing auspicious fortune and eternal beauty. The contrast between the shimmering gold and the subtle Nashiji (梨子地, sprinkled gold background) creates a rich, radiant surface typical of the finest Meiji lacquerware. ⸻ Artistic & Historical Features • Period: Meiji era (c. 1868–1912), representing the golden age of Japanese lacquer artistry. • Interior: The inner surface displays luxurious Nashiji and Kin-sunago (gold flakes) decoration, creating a dynamic, tiger-like pattern effect. • Condition: Remarkably well-preserved for its age.
