Item Description
This exquisite sake cup is a distinguished work by Shimada Fumio (1948-), a renowned ceramic artist and Professor Emeritus at Tokyo University of the Arts. Executed in his characteristic white glaze technique, this piece exemplifies his mastery of porcelain craftsmanship.
The spherical form showcases an elegant openwork design featuring delicately carved floral motifs that create beautiful patterns of light and shadow. The white glaze exhibits a subtle bluish tint characteristic of fine porcelain, with gentle variations in tone that add depth and visual interest to the surface. This openwork technique not only serves as decoration but also creates an intriguing tactile experience when holding the cup.
Shimada's expertise is evident in the precision of the openwork carving and the refined application of glaze. The piece demonstrates his deep understanding of Song dynasty celadon traditions while incorporating contemporary aesthetic sensibilities. The form is balanced and harmonious, with the carved decorations flowing naturally around the spherical body, making it both a functional sake vessel and an artistic object.
The work comes with its original signed wooden box (tomobako), confirming authenticity and provenance. This is a wonderful example of Shimada's artistry during his mature period, combining technical excellence with aesthetic refinement—a sophisticated piece that elevates the sake drinking experience.
