Description:
Traditional Japanese handheld candlestick / oil lamp from the Edo period, 19th century. The lamp features a characteristic curved handle for carrying, a shallow dish at the top for the candle or oil wick, and a hook beneath intended for hanging wick scissors. The base contains a hinged compartment used for collecting trimmed wick remains.
This type of utilitarian lighting object is associated with Japanese folk craft traditions and is documented in museum collections of Edo-period domestic tools. The restrained, functional design reflects practical everyday use rather than decorative intent.
The construction, proportions and functional details correspond closely to documented Edo-period examples of Japanese candlesticks used in domestic interiors.
Condition:
