It is attributed to Beppu Tanpū (別府探風, 1875–1953), a painter from Tokyo who studied under Matsumoto Fūko in the Yōsai school, specialising in historical figures and bird-and-flower subjects. Dating from the early showa period, the work depicts a samurai in full armour, standing before the door of a building with brush in hand. At first sight it may appear as though he is painting the wall, but this is in fact a dramatic representation of a warrior tradition: composing and inscribing a farewell poem (jisei no ku) or last words before entering battle or facing death. The act symbolises resolve, honour, and the enduring power of words, even when the warrior himself may not survive. The detailed armour is vividly rendered in blues, reds, and golds, with careful attention to the decorative lacing and weaponry. His stern expression and poised brush highlight the solemnity of the moment, capturing both the warrior’s martial spirit and his cultured refinement. Beppu Tanpu was born in 1875 in Fukagawa, Tokyo, and was active through the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras. His works often combine dramatic historical themes with delicate painterly technique, making them sought after by collectors of Japanese historical painting. Condition: The scroll shows some small insect holes, a minor tear, sun-fading, stains, and signs of age, as shown in the photographs. Fair to good used condition overall. Overall Dimensions: approx. H 197 cm W 60 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
