【Product details】
This set consists of three lidded containers by Jinnai Sakata, created after 2014. Each piece is hand-shaped from Mashiko clay and fired through high-temperature carbonisation, giving the surface a deep black tone that is uncommon within traditional Mashiko ware. The rough-hewn textures and Sakata’s characteristic deep-impression pattern emphasise the raw, sculptural presence of the clay. Although shaped as vessels, they also stand independently as contemporary art objects, highlighting the artist’s exploration of form, material and surface. They may be used as small containers, or simply appreciated as sculptural pieces.
Mashiko ware, produced in Tochigi Prefecture since the late Edo period, is known for its earthy clay and warm tactile quality. Sakata reinterprets this tradition through a modern sensibility, working across pottery, paper, glass and lighting. He studied under Shoji Kamoda in 1964 and established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966, later exhibiting widely in Japan and abroad.
Good used condition with minor signs of use. Minor kiln-related hairlines are present. Please refer to the photos for details.
