Each piece is housed in its own original wooden storage box. The first maedate depicts a dragon, traditionally used as a powerful symbol of protection, authority, and spiritual strength. The dragon holds a green jewel representing the wish-granting sacred gem, a motif associated with wisdom and fulfilment. The carving is deeply modelled, with dynamic movement emphasised through the flowing body and expressive head. The second maedate is based on fern leaves, a motif long associated with longevity and prosperity, as ferns remain evergreen and reproduce vigorously. Fern crests were favoured by prominent samurai families, including Tokugawa Ieyasu, as symbols of enduring lineage and stability. The layered leaves are carefully carved to create a bold yet elegant silhouette when mounted on a helmet. Both pieces are carved from wood and finished with genuine gold leaf, giving them a rich surface presence that reflects light beautifully. The dragon includes a green stone (probably jade) accent, adding contrast and visual focus. These maedate were designed to be mounted at the front of a kabuto to convey strength, belief, and identity on the battlefield, and today they remain highly appealing as display pieces for samurai armour collectors. The set is in good used condition with minor blemishes consistent with age. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions of Dragon: approx.
