Kakumei Reijin 覚明霊神was born in 1719 in Ushiyama-chō 牛山町 under the secular name Niwa Jin’emon 丹羽仁右衛門. In his twenties, he embraced a monastic life, devoting himself to ascetic practices and undertaking multiple pilgrimages to the sacred sites of Shikoku 四国 as a shugenja 修験者.
During his seventh pilgrimage in 1766, Kakumei experienced a spiritual awakening in the mountains of Kōchi Prefecture 高知県, receiving the sacred Shōko-ishi 鉦鈷石 and the divine name "Kakumei." He was commanded to "open Mount Ontake 御嶽山 in Shinano Province" 信濃国.
Despite significant persecution, he succeeded in establishing Mount Ontake as a sacred site in 1785, following his earlier efforts at Mount Ena 恵那山. Kakumei’s dedication and spiritual insight cemented his legacy as a revered religious figure in Japan.
