It originated as a garment worn by local firefighters in the Edo period and is still worn today at events like the New Year's Parade. It's made of a thick, sashiko-woven fabric made of alternating cotton threads to prevent holes from flying sparks, making it highly durable. It features black and white sashiko fabric with red trim on the collar and cuffs.
