Item Description:
Teramoto Mamoru 寺本守 - Black Glazed Jar with Silver Luster Decoration (Kokuyū Ginsai Tsubo)
This is a striking large-scale jar by Teramoto Mamoru, one of the most celebrated contemporary ceramic artists working in the Kasama tradition.
The piece showcases his masterful command of metallic luster techniques, featuring a deep black glaze (kokuyū) embellished with elegant silver decoration (ginsai), creating a sophisticated interplay between the rich, dark surface and luminous metallic accents.
The jar exhibits a beautifully proportioned ovoid form with gently curved shoulders that taper gracefully toward the neck.
The black glaze provides a lustrous, mirror-like surface that serves as the perfect canvas for the silver luster decoration, which creates subtle patterns and highlights that shift and shimmer depending on the viewing angle and lighting.
This technique demonstrates Teramoto's exceptional skill in controlling kiln atmosphere and glaze chemistry to achieve these complex metallic effects.
Teramoto Mamoru is recognized both domestically and internationally as a master of contemporary Kasama ware.
After studying overglaze enamel painting under master potter Matsumoto Saikazu in Kutani, he established his kiln in Kasama in 1976.
His artistic philosophy centers on creating works free from conventional constraints, incorporating unexpected patterns and layered decorative elements that give his pieces distinctive character and visual impact.
The artist's workshop is equipped with electric, gas, and climbing kilns (noborigama), which he uses selectively to produce diverse works ranging from earthenware to porcelain, employing techniques including yakishime (unglazed high-fired ware), overglaze decoration, inlay (zōgan), and silver luster (ginsai).
This jar exemplifies his mastery of the ginsai technique, one of his signature decorative methods.
Teramoto has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Japan Craft Association Award at the Traditional Crafts Ceramics Section Exhibition and the Encouragement Award at the MOA Museum of Art's 21st Century Traditional Crafts exhibition.
His works have been featured at the Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum and he is dedicated to promoting Kasama ware through interviews, lectures, and public engagement.

Training and Background:
After studying overglaze enamel painting (uwaetsuke) under master potter Matsumoto Saikazu in Kutani, Teramoto established his kiln in Kasama in 1976. Artistic Philosophy:
Teramoto's creative theme centers on working with free conception unrestricted by formalism. He achieves distinctive impressions in his works by layering unexpected patterns and decorative elements. His approach embraces the unpredictable nature of kiln firing, particularly in his use of the climbing kiln (noborigama), where variations in ash deposits, heat distribution, and flame patterns create unique, unrepeatable results.
Technical Mastery:
His workshop is equipped with electric kilns, gas kilns, and climbing kilns, which he uses strategically to produce diverse works including earthenware and porcelain. His repertoire encompasses multiple techniques including yakishime (unglazed high-fired ware), overglaze decoration, inlay (zōgan), and silver luster (ginsai), demonstrating remarkable versatility.
