Artist Profile Saegusa Sotaro (1911-2006) was one of Japan's most respected sculptors of the 20th century. Born in Shodoshima, Kagawa Prefecture, he graduated from the metalwork department of Kagawa Prefectural School of Industrial Arts before completing his studies at Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1935, where he trained under the legendary sculptor Kitamura Seibo. After graduation, Saegusa taught at various institutions while continuing his artistic practice. He exhibited consistently at major exhibitions including Nitten and Shinkozo-sha, becoming a member of both organizations. His dedication to sculpture earned him multiple accolades, including two Chunichi Prizes at Nitten exhibitions (1958 and 1987), the Tokyo Governor's Prize at the 65th Shinkozo Exhibition (1993), and the Minister of Education Award at the 71st Shinkozo Exhibition (1999).
