Very fine workmanship by notable mingei artist Shimaoka Tatsuzo, living national treasure, ascending dragon design by Sekido Sanjin (Sekido Sanjin) (1918-2008). Shimaoka Tatsuzo (27. October 1919. – 11. December 2007.) was a Japanese mingei potter who studied under Hamada Shoji and later became the second Living National Treasure of Mashiko, Japan. He was best known for his unique Jomon zogan style of pottery, and was a master of many slip decorating and firing techniques for pottery. Throughout his career, Shimaoka worked collaboratively with a group of workers, students, and apprentices from Japan and abroad. After supervising the loading of what would become his last noborigama firing in late 2007, Shimaoka collapsed, and died several weeks later in late 2007. In 1996 Shimaoka was designated a Living National Treasure (Ningen Kokuho) by the Japanese Government. This honor was bestowed upon him for his unique contribution to the art of pottery. Senju Satoh (1918 – 2008) was an entrepreneur who served as the president and later the chairman of Senju Metal Industry Co., Ltd. He started collecting art when he was in his late teens, and eventually built up a distinctive collection, consisting mainly of ceramics. The collection covers a wide range of works, and all of them are charming. It also offers a glimpse into Satoh’s relationships with various artists. Sekido Museum of Art was founded in April 2006 by the Satoh Artcraft Research & Scholarship Foundation to promote international cultural exchange and mutual understanding through artcraft and to enhance Japanese culture.
