Item Description This lot features a delightful pair of Japanese creative kokeshi dolls, both accented with distinctive red ribbon motifs that give them a gentle and charming character. The larger kokeshi is titled “Taishun” (The title can be translated as “Awaiting Spring”). It has a solid, well-balanced form with a calm, forward-looking expression. The body is decorated with stylized floral motifs rendered directly onto the wood grain, creating a harmonious blend of carving, painting, and natural material. The red ribbon on the head adds a playful yet elegant accent. The artist’s mark is present on the base. The smaller kokeshi presents a softer, more rounded silhouette with a shy, downward gaze. Its body is richly decorated with colorful floral patterns visible beneath the hair framing, giving the impression of a kimono-like design. The red ribbon with white dot details enhances its cute and warm appearance. This piece is also signed on the base by the artist. Both dolls show light surface wear and patina consistent with age and handmade wooden works. These signs of use do not detract from their appeal and instead contribute to their authenticity. Please examine the photographs carefully for details of condition. Artist Tomio Ishida is a Gunma-based kokeshi artist and a recipient of awards at the National Kokeshi Competition. His works are known for their balanced forms, gentle expressions, and tasteful decorative motifs. Kenji Koyano is a prize-winning artist at the National Kokeshi Competition, recognized for creating charming creative kokeshi with warm expressions and refined painted details.
