【Product details】
This refined kogo incense container was created during the Showa period by the Kaga maki-e artist Nakatani Takayoshi. The glossy black lacquer surface is decorated in fine gold maki-e with an autumn insect motif. On the lid, a bell cricket is delicately depicted, with its wings highlighted using raden (mother of pearl) inlay. This use of raden evokes both the visual beauty of the insect and the cool, resonant sound associated with autumn evenings.
Inside the lid, pampas grass is rendered in gold maki-e. In Japanese aesthetics, the bell cricket symbolises the arrival of autumn, quiet contemplation, and refined seasonal sensitivity, often celebrated in poetry and tea ceremony culture. Pampas grass represents the fleeting nature of the seasons and the gentle transition from summer to autumn, reinforcing the poetic atmosphere of impermanence and calm.
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the surface.
Nakatani Takayoshi was born in Showa 23 (1948). From Showa 48 onward, he exhibited three times at the Yamanaka Lacquerware Authentic Maki-e Exhibition, receiving awards such as the Yamanaka Wooden Lacquerware Cooperative Chairman’s Prize and the Chamber of Commerce Chairman’s Prize. His works were also exhibited at the Kaga Art Exhibition, the National Lacquerware Exhibition, and the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and he received a commendation at the Nitten-related art exhibition.
The piece comes with its original wooden box bearing a handwritten title, the artist’s signature, and seal.
