The seal is nicely carved in the shape of a bamboo shoot. The stone is, or resembles Shoushan stone. One side of the seal is engraved with Chinese characters. Origin: Recently, we had the privilege of acquiring a richly varied collection of old/antique Chinese stone seals. These remarkable seals have been brought together over many years by a private collector. They consist of good quality authentic Chinese seals made from various colored mineral stones, including possibly shoushan stone (larderite). The dating varies; but they are all from the Qing period to the 20th century. Carved by: Hengyun Shanmin (胡公寿) 1823-1886. Dated: 1880, April. About: Hu Gongshou was a representative painter of the Shanghai School of Painting in the late Qing Dynasty. Hu Gongshou (1823-1886), whose original name was Yuan, also known as Hengyun Shanmin, was a native of Huating (now Songjiang, Shanghai) and a core painter of the Shanghai School of Painting in the late Qing Dynasty. He was highly accomplished in landscape, orchid, bamboo and flower painting, and integrated ancient and modern techniques to form a unique style. As an important member of the "Feidan Pavilion Calligraphy and Painting Society", he worked with painters such as Ren Bonian and Zhang Xiong to promote the development of Shanghai School of Art.
