Winiama Kenudeh Τελετουργική μάσκα - Gurunshi - Μπουρκίνα Φάσο (χωρίς τιμή ασφαλείας)
This carved wooden helmet mask originates from Burkina Faso and belongs to the Winiama people, a subgroup of the Gurunsi cultural complex of West Africa. It is identified as a Kenudeh mask, a ceremonial form traditionally worn during important communal rituals such as initiations and funerary ceremonies.
The mask is carved from wood and retains traces of natural mineral pigments, including kaolin-based white surface layers with darker and reddish accents. Its form is distinguished by three vertical crests rising from the crown, a defining stylistic feature of Winiama mask carving and a motif associated with bush spirits and the mediation between the human and spiritual realms. The facial features, surface modelling, and pigment layering are consistent with authentic ritual use rather than later decorative or tourist production.
The mask measures approximately 48 cm in height and 22.5 cm in width. It is in good condition, showing surface wear, patina, and minor losses that are consistent with age and ceremonial handling. Such traces are considered integral to the character and authenticity of ritual objects of this type.
The piece was acquired from a private European collection and was initially catalogued under a broader Gurunsi attribution. Subsequent stylistic analysis allows for a more precise identification as a Winiama Kenudeh mask, dating to the mid-20th century. Comparable examples are represented in museum and private collections.
