Item Description:
This is a masterpiece Bizen ware bowl created by the Living National Treasure Fujiwara Kei.
The work showcases the distinctive characteristics of Bizen pottery with its natural kiln effects and robust sculptural presence that exemplify the artist's mature style.
The bowl demonstrates Fujiwara's mastery of traditional Bizen techniques while incorporating his signature approach of utilizing the natural transformations that occur within the kiln during firing.
The piece exhibits the rich, earthy tones and organic surface variations characteristic of authentic Bizen ware, achieved through extended high-temperature firing without the use of glazes.
These natural effects, known as "kiln changes," create unique patterns and coloration that make each Bizen piece one-of-a-kind.
The bowl's dignified form and substantial presence reflect Fujiwara's philosophy of creating works that are both aesthetically powerful and functionally excellent.
This work comes with its original signed wooden tomobako storage box and protective cloth, confirming its authenticity.
As a piece by Japan's second Living National Treasure in Bizen ware following Kaneshige Toyo, this bowl represents an important work from one of the most celebrated ceramic masters of the 20th century.

Artist Profile
Fujiwara Kei (1899-1983) was designated as a Living National Treasure for Bizen ware in 1970, becoming the second master to receive this honor in the Bizen tradition. Born in Okayama Prefecture, Fujiwara initially pursued a literary career in Tokyo, working as an editor and publishing two volumes of poetry. However, at age 38, he returned to his hometown and, at the recommendation of scholar Masamune Atsuo, began his journey in ceramic arts under the tutelage of Bizen master Mimura Baikei.
Fujiwara later studied under Kaneshige Toyo, the first Living National Treasure in Bizen ware, developing his own distinctive style that honored ancient Bizen traditions while embracing a modern aesthetic sensibility. His approach was characterized as "simple, clear, and bold," in contrast to his teacher's more refined style. Fujiwara's work successfully revived the robust spirit of Momoyama-period Bizen ware while incorporating contemporary sculptural values.
Throughout his career, Fujiwara received numerous prestigious awards including the Order of the Sacred Treasure (Fourth Class) in 1972, the Sanki Memorial Prize from Okayama Prefecture in 1973, and the Order of the Sacred Treasure (Third Class) posthumously in 1983. In 1976, he became an honorary citizen of Bizen City, and the Fujiwara Kei Memorial Museum was established to preserve his legacy and extensive collection of ko-Bizen (ancient Bizen ware).
His influence extended beyond his own work through the success of his sons, Fujiwara Yu and Fujiwara Kyosuke, both of whom became distinguished Bizen artists. Fujiwara Yu was later designated as a Living National Treasure in 1996, making them the first father-son pair to both receive this honor in the ceramics field.
