Astropecten aranciacus – Mediterranean Sand Star
Dry Preserved Specimen
This is a dried and naturally preserved specimen of Astropecten aranciacus, one of the largest and most distinctive starfish species native to the Mediterranean Sea.
The specimen displays the classic five-armed radial symmetry characteristic of the genus, with broad, triangular arms radiating from a relatively large central disc. Along the margins of each arm runs a striking series of well-developed spines, arranged in regular rows. These marginal spines are a defining feature of Astropecten aranciacus, giving the starfish its bold, structured outline and a slightly armored appearance.
The dorsal surface shows a dense arrangement of calcified ossicles, creating a finely textured pattern across the disc and arms. Natural tones range from sandy beige to warm brown, reflecting the species’ adaptation to sandy and soft-bottom Mediterranean habitats, where it lives partially buried and actively hunts mollusks.
This dry-preserved specimen retains excellent structural detail, clearly highlighting the skeletal architecture typical of echinoderms. It makes an outstanding piece for scientific study, educational use, or display in a natural history collection or cabinet of curiosities.
A refined and authentic Mediterranean marine specimen combining biological interest with strong visual impact.
