A dark patinated bronze sculpture of exceptional quality depicting a study of a powerful roaring tiger. The animal is shown in a dynamic and engaging posture, with the hind legs bent, the tail curling upward toward the end, and the body set on an oblique axis that rises to the elevated head. The jaws are wide open, revealing the animal’s teeth, while the whiskers are rendered in relief. The characteristic stripes of the tiger’s coat are masterfully modeled and highlighted by a subtly different patina, perceptible even to the touch. Signed beneath the belly with the mark of the Maruki Company 丸喜社 (within a square) and the signature of the sculptor Atsuyoshi 厚義. Atsuyoshi was a master sculptor renowned for his finely modeled bronze studies of animals. He worked for the Maruki Company, active in Japan during the Meiji period (1868–1912), a firm distinguished by the refinement and substantial weight of its sculptures and regarded as one of the finest producers of Japanese bronzes. Weight: 5.8 kg Okimono (置物), combining the kanji "oki" (置き, to place) and "mono" (物, object), refers to a decorative object meant for display. Okimono, popular in the Meiji period (1868 - 1912), were finely crafted sculptures made from materials such as ivory, boxwood, wood, and bronze. ---The okimono is in good condition.
