Αρχαία Αίγυπτος, Νέο Βασίλειο Μεγάλο τμήμα αιγυπτιακού σαρκοφάγου με σκηνή τελετής του Άνουβις

The sarcophagus fragment depicts an impressively preserved ritual scene with two deities, a set of scales and other decorative details. Material: Wood with beautiful remnants of paintwork Date: New Kingdom to Late Period, approx. 1550 - 300 BC Dimensions: Height of the sarcophagus fragment (without stand) 60.1 cm, width 19.3 cm and depth 2.3 cm. Condition: Good condition The fragment belongs to a vertical wooden panel of an Egyptian sarcophagus, presumably part of a side wall or an inner panel structure. The surface bears multi-layered polychrome painting on a light-coloured primer. The preserved pigments consist mainly of red, black, blue and white. The composition is divided by horizontal register lines. In the upper area there is a band of dots in red. Below this band are two areas with figures which, despite being heavily fragmented, reveal iconographic features. In the middle of the image there is a ritual scene with two standing figures above which is a balance-like crossbeam with a preserved right-hand weighing pan. This constellation refers to a weighing or testing context, without the exact process being determinable with certainty. The figure on the right shows characteristics of a jackal- or dog-headed deity with a red body and is therefore likely to represent Anubis. Opposite her stands another deity or ritual figure with a long sceptre; the identity remains indeterminable due to the fragmented head section. To the right of the weighing pan is another human figure with raised arms. The posture corresponds to a gesture of veneration or worship by an Egyptian, as is often seen in funerary weighing and judgment scenes. The red dotted band serves as a decorative border and structures the scene. Painted wooden fragments of this kind usually come from the inside of anthropomorphic or box-shaped sarcophagi and depict figures who acted as protective powers for the deceased or as part of the funerary cycle of gods. Provenance: From the former private collection of C. K., southern Germany. The acquisition took place before 1983 from the estate of Baroness Irene von Ohlendorff. Acquired on the German art market. Please notice: Due to the German Cultural Property Protection Act, an export licence is required for this item for shipment within the EU or to a third country. There is a one-time application fee of €25, which must be paid separately by the buyer. This fee covers the entire application, regardless of how many items are included. We will submit the necessary documents and handle the application process free of charge. The processing time is approximately 7–10 working days.
