Αρχαία Αίγυπτος, ελληνορωμαϊκή εποχή Αιγυπτιακό ειδώλιο από πηλό με φαλλό και λύρα | γονιμότητα και αποτροπικός συμβολισμός
Seated terracotta figure of a man with phallus and lyre.
Material: Terracotta
Date: 1st - 2nd century AD (Egypt, Roman period)
Dimensions: Length 11.4 cm
Condition: very good to good condition, with minor losses on the reverse
The terracotta figure shows a naked, seated man with an oversized phallus. He is playing a lyre with both hands, which is resting on the phallus. The facial features and body shapes are stylized but clearly modelled. The lyre is depicted in simplified outline and strings. Remnants of stucco and polychromy attest to a once colorful design. The reverse has a missing part.
Depictions of this kind with an emphatically erotic and playful imagery are part of the repertoire of popular terracotta art in Egypt during the Roman Empire. The combination of music, fertility symbolism and exaggerated masculinity possibly refers to a Dionysian festival culture or apotropaic functions. Figures of this type often originate from the Alexandrian region and show the simultaneous presence of Roman, Greek and Egyptian pictorial traditions.
Provenance: From the former and famous collection of Mr. J. P., Paris collected between 1980 and 2010. Acquired on the French art market (A.E.).
