Susanoo no Mikoto 素戔嗚男命
He is also believed to be the god of storms and the god of exorcism. Although he was banished from the heavenly realm for his wild and violent behavior, he also has a strong sense of justice and wisdom, as evidenced by his success in defeating the Yamata-no-orochi, and can be said to be a multifaceted god. Because of this heroic aspect, he is sometimes worshipped as the god of war.
Marked by its forceful expression and bold carving, this Bicchu Kagura wooden mask of Susanoo no Mikoto, created by Bonsui, conveys the dynamic nature of the Shinto deity associated with storms, exorcism, and heroic strength. Susanoo’s complex character—wild and unruly yet capable of decisive wisdom, as shown in his defeat of the Yamata‑no‑Orochi—is reflected in the sharply defined features, intense gaze, and prominent mustache and beard. The mask’s pale tones accented with red and black heighten its dramatic presence, capturing both the ferocity and the protective power attributed to this multifaceted god.
