Ancient Chinese, Han Dynasty Polychrome Pottery Bird with Bronze Legs Circa 2nd-1st century BC This lovely pottery bird is depicted in an upright stance with a long tapering tail and rounded breast, set on slender bronze legs with flat, splayed feet. The head is painted red with incised crosshatch markings at the neck, while the wings and tail are decorated with traces of red, black, and white pigment. The surface is smooth, with faint incised lines marking the wing feathers. The separately cast bronze legs are inserted beneath the body. This pottery bird serves as a distinctive example of mingqi, a diverse array of objects, including representations of everyday life, animals, and other items placed in tombs to accompany the deceased in the afterlife.
