Ceremonial Dance Wand in the Form of a Frigate Bird
Marovo Lagoon, Solomon Islands
Wood, carved
Collected in the colonial period
This finely carved ceremonial dance wand originates from the Marovo Lagoon region of the Solomon Islands. The object is sculpted in the stylized form of a frigate bird, a creature of profound symbolic importance in the maritime cultures of the western Solomons.
The elongated body and extended wings are rendered with elegant linear clarity, emphasizing movement and aerodynamic grace. The frigate bird, often associated with agility, prestige, and spiritual potency, appears frequently in ceremonial art and dance regalia of the region.
Such wands were held and displayed during ritual performances and community ceremonies, where dance functioned as both social expression and cosmological enactment. The dynamic avian form would have enhanced the visual impact of movement, reinforcing the symbolic presence of ancestral or spirit forces.
The surface shows a consistent patina and wear indicative of age and handling.
Condition: Very good, with expected wear consistent with ceremonial use.
Provenance: Colonial-era collection.
Condition: Excellent, with age-appropriate wear.
Provenance: Dutchcollection.
A strong and authentic example of West Papuan material culture.
