A captivating tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) depicting a dramatic scene from the Battles of Kawanakajima 川中島の戦い. The Battles of Kawanakajima were a series of military confrontations fought during the Sengoku period between Takeda Shingen 武田信玄 (1521–1573), daimyô of Kai Province, and Uesugi Kenshin 上杉謙信 (1530–1578), daimyô of Echigo Province. The Fourth Battle of Kawanakajima in 1561 is particularly renowned and is remembered as one of the most dramatic encounters of the era. At the height of the battle, Kenshin is said to have ridden directly into Shingen’s command post. As their armies clashed around them, the two warlords engaged in single combat, Kenshin striking with his sword while Shingen defended himself with his war fan as he was surprised by the attack. The episode, one of the most celebrated duels in Japanese history, is the moment portrayed on this screen. The scene is enveloped by clouds of speckled gold-leaf. Executed in ink and natural mineral pigments on mulberry paper, heightened with gold leaf specks. The painting is bordered by two brocade silk trims: a slender greyish blue inner band and a broad ecru outer band. The screen is framed in red lacquered wood fitted with protective metal hardware. Considering its age, the screen is in very good restored condition with traces of wear and losses conform age on both sides, including some retouching of the painting and repapering of the reverse.
