Zebu figure – Mehrgarh Culture, ca. 2000 BC
Small sculptural representation of a zebu, the characteristic humped cattle widely depicted in the ancient cultures of South Asia. The animal is easily recognisable by its prominent shoulder hump and stylised form, features that became emblematic in early artistic traditions of the region.
This figure originates from the Mehrgarh Culture (ca. 2000 BC), one of the earliest agricultural societies of the Indus region and a key precursor to the Indus Valley Civilization. Zebu cattle were domesticated in the Indus region and spread across neighbouring areas through trade networks during the Bronze Age, becoming an essential animal for agriculture, transport, and economic life. Because of its importance, the zebu frequently appears in ancient figurines, seals, and ritual objects, where it likely symbolised strength, prosperity, and fertility.
Accompanied by a thermoluminescence certificate issued by QED Laboratoire.
