3 τεμάχια παραδοσιακών κούκλων Κοκεσί - Ξύλο - Ιαπωνία - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

This lot consists of three traditional Japanese kokeshi dolls, handcrafted and hand-painted in the classic cylindrical form that represents one of Japan’s most beloved folk art traditions. Kokeshi originated in the Tōhoku region during the late Edo period and became especially popular from the Taishō era through the Shōwa period (Taishō–Shōwa period, 1912–1980s), both as children’s toys and as decorative art objects. The tallest doll features a beautifully grained wood body with a large rounded head and a serene, gently smiling expression. The natural wood grain is prominently visible across the face, giving it a warm and organic character. The cylindrical body is decorated with repeated red chrysanthemum-like floral motifs and black leaf patterns, creating a balanced and elegant design. On the back, there is a handwritten marker inscription reading: “Shōwa 34 (March, Civil Engineering Department Graduates) – Heisei 1 (May).” This suggests that the doll may have been used or presented as a commemorative or gift item in May of Heisei 1 (1989). Please note that this inscription is written in marker pen. The two smaller dolls display charming facial expressions with delicately painted eyes, eyebrows, and lips. One features traditional horizontal stripes in red and green with stylized floral decoration, while the other is adorned with bold red floral motifs with green leaves. The pigments show gentle aging, adding to their nostalgic and authentic character. Together, these three kokeshi embody the warmth and simplicity of Japanese folk craftsmanship. They are ideal for collectors of traditional Japanese crafts, interior decorators seeking authentic wabi-sabi aesthetics, or anyone interested in 20th-century Japanese cultural artifacts. Condition is consistent with age, showing surface wear, minor scuffs, and natural patina. Please carefully review all photographs for details. Artist / Craftsperson Information These dolls are traditional kokeshi created by Japanese folk artisans. While no specific artist signature is clearly identifiable, the style suggests production in the Tōhoku region, likely during the mid to late Shōwa period (Shōwa era, 1926–1989), possibly around the 1960s–1980s. Traditional kokeshi were typically produced by specialized woodturners (kiji-shi) who handcrafted each piece on a lathe and painted them by hand. Due to the natural wood grain and individual brushwork, each doll is unique. Size Small doll: approx. H15 × W5 × D5 cm – 103 g Large doll: approx. H30 × W8 × D8 cm – 659 g Total weight (three dolls combined): approx. 855 g Condition:(Please see the photos) - It is in vintage condition. - Due to aging, there may be some scratches, stains or dirt. - Please note that the actual impression may differ depending on the lighting conditions when taking photos.
