Rare item as such pieces are normally belt buckles but this one is a large brooch that can be worn by men or women. It is an antique ornament featuring intricate filigree work and embedded rubies and rose cut diamonds, originating from indonesia (c 19th-century) kratons (courts) in central Java. These ornate pieces were traditionally used as part of formal attire and are highly regarded as collectible items. Weighs 47.8grams.
Material: The broche is made of silver, a common material for this type of historical accessory.
Significance: Belt buckles that looks like this piece were part of formal court dress for male courtiers. Whether this item was transformed into a brooch cannot be ascertained as the 'c'clasp and hinge look original as shown in picture.
