Pre-Columbian Andean Textile Fragment
Wari (Huari) culture, Middle Horizon, circa 600–1000 AD - Peru
Camelid-fiber tapestry fragment with a vivid red ground and polychrome design in ochre, cream, brown, black, and turquoise.
The textile depicts a stylized frontal anthropomorphic figure framed by stepped and zigzag motifs, deriving from the Tiwanaku–Wari iconographic tradition and related to the Staff Deity complex.
The crisp color separation and compact, symmetrical composition are characteristic of Wari state-level tapestry weaving, distinguishing it from later coastal traditions.
Condition: Fragment with edge losses and minor wear; colors well preserved.
From the wrappings of a mummy bundle.
Time period: Ca. 600 - 1000 AD
Dimensions: 8 x 7 cm
Provenance: purchased at a German auction - with German export license
