Fossil Ammonite Lytoceras sp. in Matrix with Marine Encrustations – Madagascar
Impressive fossil ammonite identified as Lytoceras sp., preserved within its natural matrix and discovered in the Tulear region of Madagascar, an area well known for its rich marine fossil deposits.
The specimen displays a beautiful coiled ammonite shell with clearly visible ribbing, partially embedded in the surrounding sedimentary rock. On the exposed front surface, several whitish circular structures can be observed: these are the fossilized attachment bases of barnacles (Balanus sp.) that settled on the shell while it lay on the ancient sea floor. These encrusting organisms provide fascinating evidence of marine paleoecology, illustrating how other creatures colonized the shell after the ammonite’s death.
The reverse side of the matrix reveals additional paleontological interest: several ammonite fragments and a small complete ammonite are naturally preserved within the rock, together with numerous shell fragments and marine inclusions. This makes the specimen particularly appealing, as it represents a small section of an ancient fossil-bearing seabed.
The combination of the large Lytoceras ammonite, the barnacle attachment traces, and the additional ammonite remains creates a dynamic and scientifically interesting fossil composition.
The specimen is presented on a clear acrylic display stand, allowing stable and elegant display.
Please carefully examine all photographs, which form an integral part of the description.
