Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) - Eglise de campagne

Eglise de campagne|Bernard Buffet This drypoint print presents Bernard Buffet’s distinctive approach to printmaking, defined by sharp black lines that are central to his artistic expression. For Buffet, drypoint was an essential technique for conveying his characteristic linear style. Unlike etching, which uses acid, drypoint is engraved directly into the plate, making corrections difficult and requiring exceptional drawing skill. In this work, the angular forms that define Buffet’s visual language are strongly emphasized, allowing his sensibility to be conveyed more directly than in his oil paintings or lithographs. --- Artist Profile Bernard Buffet was born in Paris in 1928. In 1943, after attending evening classes, he entered the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Narbonne. In 1947, at the age of nineteen, he held his first solo exhibition and attracted attention through his participation in the Salon des Indépendants. In 1948, he received the Critics’ Prize at the age of twenty and became widely recognized as a leading figure in figurative painting. In the 1950s, he married Annabel in 1958 and developed works with richer color alongside his powerful linear style. In the 1960s, major exhibitions of his work were held in Japan, including one at the National Museum of Modern Art in 1963. In 1973, the Bernard Buffet Museum opened in Shizuoka Prefecture. In 1974, he became a member of the Académie Française. In 1999, after suffering from Parkinson’s disease and being unable to continue working, he ended his own life. --- Accessories Yellow cloth bag.
