Kimura Touhou A Pair of Bizen Ware Rabbit Figurines (Usagi Okimono) by Kimura Touhou, Toushouen Kiln This charming set of two Bizen ware rabbit figurines (usagi okimono) was crafted by Kimura Touhou of the celebrated Toushouen kiln in Bizen, Okayama Prefecture. The pair consists of one larger upright rabbit and one smaller crouching rabbit, offering a delightful contrast in pose and scale. Bizen ware is one of Japan's oldest and most revered ceramic traditions, fired at high temperatures without glaze in a wood-burning kiln. The rich, earth-toned surface is the product of natural kiln effects — the interaction of flame, ash, and clay — resulting in a warm, organic quality that is entirely unique to each piece. These rabbit figurines display the characteristic warm terracotta tones with subtle natural kiln markings that give Bizen ware its unmistakable depth and beauty. Both figures come with their original wooden storage box (tomobako), a mark of quality and authenticity in Japanese ceramics. The rabbit (usagi) holds a beloved place in Japanese culture and is considered a symbol of good fortune, agility, and prosperity, making this pair a wonderful decorative accent or a meaningful gift. Size Large rabbit: Height: 19.5 cm Width: 8 cm Depth: 13 cm Small rabbit: Height: 10 cm Width: 7 cm Depth: 17 cm Weight 729 g Condition Both pieces are in good condition with no notable chips, cracks, or significant flaws; the wooden storage box (tomobako) is included and shows only natural aging consistent with a vintage piece. Artist Profile 木村陶峰 Kimura Touhou — Toushouen Kiln, Bizen, Okayama Kimura Touhou is the second-generation master of Toushouen, a kiln established in 1913 (Taisho 2) when it branched off from the venerable Kimura main family, one of the six founding kiln families (Roku-sei) of Bizen ware. Touhou succeeded his father as head of the kiln in 1962 (Showa 37). Deeply devoted to the art of tea ceramics, he produces a wide range of works including flower vases, tea utensils, sake ware, and decorative figurines — among them twelve-zodiac animals and guardian lion (shishi) pieces. His philosophy centers on selecting fine clay, honoring tradition, and offering high-quality pieces at approachable prices. He has received the Chugoku Ministry of International Trade and Industry Director-General's Commendation for the promotion of traditional crafts, as well as the Traditional Craft Industries Merit Award. The kiln received a Good Design Award at the Washington International Exhibition. NOTICE: The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by Japan Post, DHL or FedEx depend on the situation. It takes about 3 weeks to receive normally. Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Sometimes Customes or delivery company in your country contact you for Customs clearance via phone or email. Please make sure that you could answer the phone. If you don't, the parcel will return to me and it cost more double shipping fee for reshipping. I appreciate your cooperation.
