Rare Ancient Egyptian Plumb-Bob Amulet with Incised Triad Markings (22.3 mm)
Culture/Region: Ancient Egypt
Period: Late Period (26th - 30th Dynasty, c. 664 - 332 B.C.)
Material: Faience / Steatite (weathered surface)
Dimensions: Height: 22.3 mm (excluding modern custom base)
Description:
An exceptionally rare and intriguing Ancient Egyptian amulet modeled in the shape of a mason's plumb-bob (plummet). While amulets depicting deities are common, architectural amulets like this were reserved for specific magical functions. Placed upon the mummy, the plumb-bob was associated with the concept of Maat (cosmic balance and truth), ensuring the deceased would maintain moral rectitude and an upright posture in the afterlife.
What makes this specific piece exceptionally rare is the presence of three distinct incised dots on its surface. In ancient Egyptian symbolism, the number three represents plurality, completeness, and the divine triad. These markings elevate the object from a standard architectural amulet to a highly specific protective talisman, possibly serving as a unique builder's guild mark or carrying a concentrated apotropaic numerical value.
Condition:
Very good Authentic ancient condition. The surface shows heavy, natural weathering and mineral loss consistent with prolonged burial, giving it a rough, ancient texture. The suspension hole at the top remains fully intact. Mounted on a custom display base.
Provenance:
European private collection 1970
