This hand-painted ink wash work, embodying the literati ideals of reclusion and pastoral charm, is a classic piece of the Nanga (文人画派) school, created by professional Nanga artist Kōshi (広志) during the late Meiji to early Taishō-Shōwa periods (c. 1900–1930). His full biography remains unrecorded.
The composition uses subtle ink gradations to render layered mountains shrouded in mist, with ink tones fading from dense to light, creating a profound sense of spatial depth and embodying the yūgen aesthetic central to Japanese literati painting. A winding stream meanders through the scene, flanked by rugged slopes, craggy rocks, and dense groves of ancient trees. Secluded thatched cottages nestle among the foliage, connected by a wooden plank bridge spanning the stream—forming the core of a rustic mountain dwelling scene. In the foreground, jagged rocks and waterside trees are painted with bold, dark ink strokes, creating a striking contrast of solidity and emptiness against the misty distant peaks.
The focal point is a woodcutter crossing the bridge, depicted with minimal yet expressive brushwork: he shoulders a long staff, with a bundled load of firewood precisely suggested by a bold dark ink wash on his back. His forward-leaning posture conveys the physical exertion of walking under a heavy load, infusing the tranquil landscape with vivid, rustic human vitality.
In the lower right corner, the artist signed in cursive script 広志,accompanied by a square red seal bearing the same name.
Due to its age, the paper shows natural signs of aging including oxidation, yellowing, and mold spots. The original Japanese traditional silk brocade mounting remains intact, with its pale brown scroll-grass pattern clearly visible. The overall condition is good.
