This hand-painted ink wash work, featuring a vigorous pine tree and a lively spring bird, was created by the modern Japanese artist Imai Keiju (今井景樹) in the late Taishō to early Shōwa period (c. 1910–1930).
Born Imai Yasushi (今井康), the artist used the art name Keiju and the studio name Seiken Sai (精研斎). He was a skilled bird‑and‑flower painter of the Kyoto art scene, and a student of the renowned master Imao Keinen.
In the composition, a robust pine tree occupies the right and lower sections of the painting, while a small bird flies in the upper left. This creates a classic Japanese bird‑and‑flower layout with a strong contrast between movement and stillness, as well as solid and void. The ample blank space lends an ethereal, tranquil depth to the scene.
The artist uses layered ink tones, dry brushwork, and ink-wash techniques to render the pine needles with strength and fullness: the foreground pine is painted in dark, bold ink with distinct, powerful needles; the distant pine is softened with light ink washes, creating clear spatial layers that express the pine’s resilience and vitality.
The small bird in the upper left is rendered with delicate light ink lines and washes. Details such as the clear white stripe above the eye, markings on the wings, and pale underbelly are precisely depicted. Its light, dynamic flight contrasts sharply with the heavy, calm pine, bringing vivid life to the quiet landscape.
The painting employs both dry and wet brushwork, combining the freedom of freehand brushwork — seen in the pine needles and background washes — with the delicacy of realistic depiction in the bird’s form. It is a typical example of modern Japanese bird‑and‑flower painting, which follows nature while embodying literati elegance.
In Japanese culture, the pine symbolizes longevity, perseverance, and nobility, a classic motif of moral character in traditional literati painting. The bird is seen as a messenger of spring, representing vitality, hope, and the quiet charm of the wilderness.
Signature & Seals:
In the lower right corner, the artist signed in cursive script Keiju (景樹).
Two red square seals are impressed below:
Upper seal: Seiken Sai (精研斎) (studio seal);
Lower seal: Keiju (景樹) (art name seal in seal script).
Due to its age, the paper shows natural signs of aging, including oxidation, yellowing, minor mold spots, insect damage, and edge wear. The overall condition is good.
