Ένα ξύλινο γλυπτό - voodoo - Φον - Τόγκο (χωρίς τιμή ασφαλείας)
A Fon/Vodoo sculpture, Togo/Benin, with large legs and without arms, a short thick neck supports an ovoid head, traces of Kaolin, incl. stand.
This carved wooden figure originates from the Fon people of southern Benin and Togo, a region historically associated with the Kingdom of Dahomey. Traditionally, such sculptures are used in Vodou religious practices to honor spirits (lwa) or ancestors, serving as mediators between the spiritual and material worlds. The figure exhibits characteristic stylization with an elongated head, prominent facial features, and abstracted body proportions, reflecting its spiritual rather than purely representational function. Elements such as metal attachments, mirrors, or incised scarification may be incorporated to amplify its ritual potency. Crafted primarily from wood and occasionally augmented with beads, cloth, or cowrie shells, this sculpture embodies both aesthetic refinement and ritual significance. Historically, works of this type have been collected by European and international institutions, yet within their original context, they function as active participants in ceremonies, protective rites, and devotional offerings.
