A Japanese biwa 琵琶, of the Chikuzen 筑前 type, a four-stringed lute with 5 frets traditionally used for narrative and poetic performance.
The body is crafted from dark brown keyaki 欅 (zelkova) wood, while the soundboard is made of light kiri 桐 (paulownia) wood. The front is decorated with an elegant crescent moon inlay 月 (tsuki).
The biwa was introduced to Japan from China during the Nara period (710–794) and developed into several regional types. The Chikuzen-biwa emerged in northern Kyûshû and became especially associated with female performers and the recitation of historical and literary narratives.
