Northumbria Æthelred II Styca – Moneyer Monne (c. 841–843, 849–850)
A very attractive Anglo-Saxon styca of King Æthelred II of Northumbria, struck by the moneyer Monne, one of the recognised moneyers active during this fascinating Viking-Age period. Stycas formed the everyday currency of northern England and remain highly collectible pieces of early medieval history.
The coin features the classic radiating cross with central pellets, along with clear legends naming the moneyer MONNE. Weighing approximately 1.1 g, this piece displays excellent detail, strong devices, and pleasingly visible inscriptions, giving it remarkable eye appeal for this compact early medieval issue.
Coins of Æthelred II are an important part of the Northumbrian styca series, and well-preserved examples from identifiable moneyers are particularly desirable. This specimen stands out for its sharp design elements, historical significance, and impressive overall preservation, making it a wonderful addition to any Anglo-Saxon or early British coin collection.
