England / Medieval - Henry VI (1422-1461), Silver Groat, Annulet Issue, Calais Mint - 3.91g - Rare Full Weight
An exceptional and highly collectible Silver Groat from the first reign of King Henry VI (1422-1461). This specimen is from the celebrated Annulet Issue, struck at the English-controlled mint in Calais, France, between 1422 and 1430.
* Monarch: Henry VI (House of Lancaster).
* Denomination: Silver Groat (Fourpence).
* Issue: Annulet Issue (c. 1422-1430).
* Mint: Calais (Legend: VIL-LA-CAL-ISIE).
* Weight: 3.91g (Exceptional "Heavy" weight, exceeding the official 3.89g standard; unclipped).
* Obverse: Facing crowned bust of the King within a tressure of nine arches. Legend: + hEnRIC DI GRA REX AnGL Z FRAnC.
* Reverse: Long cross pattée with three pellets in each angle. Distinctive annulets (small circles) in two of the quarters and at the King's neck. Outer legend: POSVI DEVM ADIVTORE MEVM.
The coin is in a very high state of preservation for the type, featuring a clear, recognizable portrait and fully legible mint legends. Most significantly, the coin is unclipped, maintaining its full original silver weight of 3.91g—a rare find as most medieval groats were historically shaved at the edges. Toning is natural with attractive surfaces.
