Αρχαική Ελλάδα (Βοιωτία) Καθισμένος Πεπλοφόρος με Αρχικό Λευκό Slip - 14.3 cm
Greek Boeotian Terracotta Seated Peplophoros with Original White Slip – 14.3 cm
Item Details:
Culture/Period: Ancient Greece (Boeotia)
Chronology:
Material: Terracotta with white slip (engobe)
Dimensions: Height 14.3 cm.
Description:
A beautiful and highly ancient Greek terracotta figure of a seated woman, known as a Peplophoros. She is depicted wearing a traditional peplos and a high headdress (polos), seated on a throne. Figures of this specific typology were highly significant in ancient Greek religion, frequently offered at sanctuaries dedicated to chthonic deities such as Demeter or Persephone.
The piece exhibits exceptional ancient manufacturing characteristics. The back is unmodeled and features the classic circular firing vent hole, essential to the ancient firing process. Most importantly, the frontal surface retains massive, thick layers of the original white slip (engobe), which originally served as the primer for bright polychrome pigments.
Condition Report:
Intact and structurally sound. No visible repairs or restorations. The surface is heavily encrusted with thick, authentic calcareous and earthly deposits that have firmly fused with the ancient white slip over millennia. An excellent display piece for serious collectors of classical antiquities.
Provenance Statement:
The piece comes from an old European collection formed in the 1970s.
Sent with invoice and certificate of authenticity.
